ORION Cards Overview

The ORION series of A/D cards from Dewetron is second to none when it comes to simultaneous sampling performance. These are not cards which multiplex a single A/D converter among 16 or more channels - instead, each channel has its own A/D converter. The result? No possible phase shift between channels! Each channel is sampled at the same instant. This is important in many applications, especially in shock, vibration, and transient recording, when even the smallest time skew from one channel to the next can throw off your readings.

Trust the ORION series from Dewetron when it comes to continuous acquisition A/D cards! Most cards have built-in digital I/O lines and counter/encoders. But you can also order increased numbers of these additional lines, as well as two synchronous CAN ports! These features are built onto the card, and are therefore acquired in perfect sync with the analog inputs.

A/D Technologies

Delta-Sigma converter

This technique is used in the ORION-0824 and DEWE-ORION-1624 series cards. The 24-bit converters offer the highest dynamic range (up to 120 dB).  Whenever you choose a sampling rate, the used internal sampling rate is as much as 512 times higher (this depends on the sample rate, but it is always at least 64x oversampled!). Using this oversampling technique full anti aliasing protection is guaranteed. This boards can not be external clocked, but synchronized from board to board and also synchronized to GPS clock using the DEWE-GPS-CLOCK.

Flash converter

This technique is used in the ORION-1616, ORION-3216, )RION-0816, MI and AD series boards. Flash converters offer the fastest sampling rate (up to 1 MS/s @ 16-bit) as well as the possibility for external clocking. This is required for external clocked applications like distance related A/D conversion, combustion analysis as well as order tracking applications (using hardware order tracking clocked by an encoder).

What's in a name, anyway?

In the case of the ORION cards, quite a lot. The first two digits represent the number of channels. The next two digits represent the bit resolution. The final three or four digits represent the maximum sample rate (in kS/s/ch).
